“This is the second time I've had the pleasure of working with Elias on a project. When you have a capable and talented DP such as he, I feel it's best to give them enough room and freedom to bring their own ideas to the table--to me, that's the nature of true collaboration. For Over the Board, we knew we were going to be shooting in the Academy ratio, and early on I provided Elias with a range of references for shot compositions I liked, largely from the films of Yasujiro Ozu. We chose lenses that would add a sense of texture and depth to a tight frame. We wanted lighting that was dramatic, yet naturalistic. When it came time to shoot, I felt confident in letting Elias set up the shots based on our mutual understanding of the script and overall vision, which he executed beautifully. He is a cinematographer who truly understands how to serve the story.”
